This is the Electro-Motive SD40-2--the best-selling diesel-electric locomotive of all time. Almost five thousand were built, and better than two thirds of them are still at work. The SD40-2 is the locomotive that put EMD on the map in the late 70's for class I railroads. It was powerful, fuel efficient, reliable, and dependable, and is still all of those things today. CSX maintains one of the largest operable fleets today, over 500 units. This is class leader number 8000 basking in the sun near Brandon, Florida. You can't really see them, but she has dual air conditioners mounted on her cab roof, a feature unique to the SD40-2's that live in the area and never go very far.
AHHH I finally get a proper photograph of the venerable SD40-2!
I'm so happy
I saw more of these guys on Saturday than I have in the whole rest of my railfanning career!
